Our disclosure
We are authorized dealers for Thursday Pools and Azoria Pools. That means we have a business relationship with those two manufacturers. We chose them for specific reasons that we explain below, but we want you to know the relationship upfront so you can weigh our comments accordingly.
We have no business relationship with the other manufacturers on this list. We include them because they make quality products that Ontario homeowners should know about, even if they are not the brands we carry.
What actually matters in a fiberglass pool shell?
Not all fiberglass pool shells are made the same way, even though they look similar from the outside. Here are the things that actually affect how well the shell holds up over 20 or 30 years:
- Resin type. Vinyl ester resin absorbs less water than polyester resin. This matters because water absorption causes osmotic blistering. Premium manufacturers use vinyl ester for at least the outer layers. Budget manufacturers sometimes use polyester throughout.
- Gel coat thickness and consistency. The gel coat is the coloured surface you see and touch. It should be applied evenly at a consistent thickness (typically 20 to 25 mils). Uneven gel coat is more prone to spider cracks and fading.
- Number of fibreglass layers. More layers generally means a stronger, stiffer shell. The exact layup schedule (how many layers, what types of mat and roving, how they are arranged) varies by manufacturer.
- Structural warranty. A lifetime structural warranty signals that the manufacturer trusts their product. Read the fine print. Some "lifetime" warranties are prorated, meaning the coverage decreases over time.
- Model selection. More models means more choices for your backyard. But a manufacturer with 40 excellent models is better than one with 80 average models.
- Availability in Ontario. Even the best pool shell is not helpful if there is no dealer within a reasonable distance. Shipping a pool shell across the continent adds cost and risk.

Thursday Pools
Thursday Pools is based in Fortville, Indiana and has been manufacturing fiberglass pool shells since 2011. They are one of the newer manufacturers in the industry, which means their designs incorporate more modern features like tanning ledges, built-in bench seating, and generous step entries.
Shell quality
Thursday Pools uses vinyl ester resin in their shell construction. Their layup process includes multiple layers of fibreglass mat and woven roving for structural strength. The gel coat is applied robotically for consistent thickness, which reduces the risk of spider cracks from uneven application.
Model selection
About 40 models covering rectangles, freeforms, Roman ends, and plunge/cocktail pools. Sizes range from small 10 x 20 foot plunge pools to large 16 x 40 foot family pools. Their most popular models include the Cathedral, Sandal, and Graceland.
Warranty
Lifetime structural warranty. Lifetime osmotic blister warranty. 15-year surface warranty on the gel coat. This is one of the stronger warranty packages in the industry.
Availability in Ontario
Thursday Pools has a growing dealer network in Ontario. Shells ship from Indiana, which is a reasonable distance for Ontario installations. We are an authorized Thursday Pools dealer and installer.
Price range
Shell prices typically run $28,000 to $45,000 CAD depending on model and size. Mid-range pricing for the industry. For a full breakdown of total project costs, see our fiberglass pool cost guide for Ontario.
Latham (Narellan)
Latham is the largest pool manufacturer in North America. They acquired Narellan Pools (an Australian manufacturer known for innovation in fiberglass) and now produce a combined lineup. They also own several other pool brands.
Shell quality
Latham uses a proprietary layup process. Their shells use vinyl ester resin and they offer a ceramic core composite option on some models for added rigidity. Their gel coat application is factory-controlled with quality checks throughout the process.
Model selection
About 80 models across multiple product lines, making them one of the widest selections in the industry. They cover every common shape and size, from small plunge pools to large family rectangles. Their SmartFit line and Narellan-derived designs are particularly well-regarded.
Warranty
Lifetime structural warranty. The gel coat warranty varies by product line. Check the specific warranty document for the model you are considering. Some Latham products carry a more comprehensive surface warranty than others.
Availability in Ontario
Strong dealer network across Ontario. Latham's size means they have multiple shipping points and generally good availability. Lead times can vary depending on model popularity.
Price range
Shell prices run $25,000 to $48,000 CAD depending on model, size, and product line. They cover a wide range from budget-friendly to premium.
Azoria Pools (formerly Dolphin Pools)
Azoria is a Canadian manufacturer based in Quebec. They rebranded from Dolphin Pools and have been manufacturing fiberglass shells in Canada for decades. Being Canadian-made is an advantage for Ontario homeowners because it avoids cross-border shipping complications and import duties on the shell itself.
Shell quality
Azoria uses vinyl ester resin and a multi-layer construction process. Their shells are known for being well-built with consistent gel coat application. Because they manufacture in Canada, their shells are designed with Canadian climate conditions in mind.
Model selection
About 30 models. Smaller lineup than some US competitors, but the models cover the most popular shapes and sizes well. Their designs tend to be practical and family-oriented.
Warranty
Lifetime structural warranty. Surface warranty varies by model. As a Canadian company, warranty claims are handled domestically, which can be simpler than dealing with a US manufacturer for warranty service.
Availability in Ontario
Strong presence in Ontario. Shipping from Quebec is shorter and cheaper than shipping from the southern US. We are an authorized Azoria dealer and installer.
Price range
Shell prices run $24,000 to $40,000 CAD. Generally competitive pricing, partly because there are no border-crossing costs on the shell.
San Juan Pools
San Juan Pools has been manufacturing fiberglass pool shells since 1958, making them one of the oldest fiberglass pool companies in North America. They are based in Florida and have a large network of dealers.
Shell quality
San Juan's shell quality varies by model and product line. Some models use vinyl ester resin, while others use polyester. If you are considering a San Juan pool, ask specifically about the resin type for the model you want. Their long history means they have refined their manufacturing process, but the resin inconsistency across the lineup is worth noting.
Model selection
About 80 models, one of the largest selections available. They cover virtually every shape and size, including some niche designs that other manufacturers do not offer. If you have a very specific shape in mind, San Juan may have it.
Warranty
Limited lifetime structural warranty. The terms vary by product line. Read the warranty document carefully and pay attention to any prorating (where coverage decreases as the pool ages).
Availability in Ontario
Limited dealer presence in Ontario. Shells ship from Florida, which is a longer haul with higher shipping costs. Fewer local dealers means fewer local service options if you need warranty support.
Price range
Shell prices run $22,000 to $45,000 CAD. Wide range reflecting the breadth of their lineup from economy to premium models.
Leisure Pools
Leisure Pools is originally an Australian company that now manufactures in Knoxville, Tennessee. They are known for their proprietary Composite Armour construction and their colour technology.
Shell quality
Leisure Pools uses vinyl ester resin and a proprietary layup they call Composite Armour, which includes a layer of Kevlar-like material for added strength. They also offer a ceramic core option. Their colour range is wider than most manufacturers, and they offer a colour-fast technology that is designed to resist fading longer than standard gel coats.
Model selection
About 40 models covering the main shapes and sizes. Their designs tend toward clean, modern lines. Their Elegance and Limitless models are among their most popular.
Warranty
Lifetime structural warranty. Lifetime osmotic blister warranty. Surface warranty on the gel coat. This is one of the stronger warranty packages in the market.
Availability in Ontario
Dealer network in Ontario, though not as extensive as Latham. Shells ship from Tennessee. Availability is generally good but can vary by model.
Price range
Shell prices run $30,000 to $48,000 CAD. Generally positioned in the mid-to-premium range.
Barrier Reef Pools
Barrier Reef is another Australian-origin manufacturer now producing in Texas. They focus on innovation in shell construction and are known for their Diamond Core Technology.
Shell quality
Barrier Reef uses vinyl ester resin and a layup that includes a honeycomb composite core for rigidity. Their Diamond Core Technology adds structural stiffness without adding excessive weight. The gel coat is UV-stable and they offer a good range of colours.
Model selection
About 30 models. Smaller lineup, but the designs are well thought out with features like full-width steps, tanning ledges, and bench seating built into the moulds.
Warranty
Lifetime structural warranty. Lifetime osmotic blister warranty. Surface warranty details vary. Another strong warranty package.
Availability in Ontario
Limited dealer presence in Ontario. Shells ship from Texas, which is a long haul. If you are interested in Barrier Reef, confirm dealer availability in your area before committing.
Price range
Shell prices run $30,000 to $48,000 CAD. Premium pricing reflecting their construction technology.
River Pools
River Pools is based in Virginia and is well known for their educational content about fiberglass pools. They began as a pool installation company and expanded into manufacturing. Their content marketing (blog articles, videos, and pricing transparency) has made them one of the most recognized names in the fiberglass pool industry.
Shell quality
River Pools uses vinyl ester resin throughout their entire shell (not just the outer layers). They also use a ceramic core for added rigidity and insulation. Their manufacturing process is well-documented because they publish detailed videos of how their shells are built.
Model selection
About 20 models. The smallest lineup on this list, but the models they offer cover the most popular shapes and sizes. Their focus is on quality over quantity.
Warranty
Lifetime structural warranty. Lifetime osmotic blister warranty. This is the most comprehensive warranty in the industry. River Pools is confident enough in their resin and layup to warrant against blistering for life.
Availability in Ontario
Limited dealer presence in Canada. River Pools has been expanding their dealer network, but availability in Ontario is still spotty. Shells ship from Virginia. Check their website for current dealer listings in your area.
Price range
Shell prices run $32,000 to $50,000 CAD. Premium pricing. River Pools positions themselves as a top-tier manufacturer and prices accordingly.
Does the manufacturer matter more than the installer?
This is one of the most common questions homeowners ask, and the honest answer is that both matter. But if you had to choose between a premium shell with a mediocre installer and a mid-range shell with an excellent installer, you should choose the excellent installer every time.
Here is why. The pool shell represents about 30 to 35 percent of your total project cost. The other 65 to 70 percent is excavation, backfill, plumbing, electrical, patio, and fencing. The quality of that work determines whether your pool develops problems like bulging walls, flotation issues, or plumbing leaks.
A top-quality shell installed poorly will develop problems. A mid-quality shell installed properly will perform well for decades.
The best scenario is a quality shell from a reputable manufacturer, installed by an experienced pool company that knows the product well. That combination gives you the lowest risk of problems over the life of the pool.
When comparing total project costs between manufacturers, the shell price difference is usually $5,000 to $12,000 for similar-sized pools. On a $100,000 project, that is a 5 to 12 percent difference. Meaningful, but not the dominant factor. For a full picture of where the money goes, read our detailed cost breakdown for fiberglass pools in Ontario.
Ask your pool company which manufacturers they carry, why they chose those brands, and how many pools they have installed with that specific shell. A company that has installed 50 pools from the same manufacturer knows that shell inside and out. A company installing a brand for the first time may run into learning-curve issues.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which fiberglass pool manufacturer has the best warranty in Canada?
Thursday Pools and Leisure Pools both offer lifetime structural warranties. Latham offers a lifetime structural warranty as well. River Pools provides a lifetime structural warranty plus lifetime osmotic blister protection. Warranty terms vary, so read the full documents carefully. Lifetime structural does not always mean lifetime coverage on the gel coat surface.
Are fiberglass pool shells manufactured in Canada?
Azoria Pools (formerly Dolphin Pools) manufactures fiberglass pool shells in Quebec. Latham has manufacturing facilities across North America, including plants that serve the Canadian market. Most other manufacturers (Thursday Pools, San Juan, River Pools, Barrier Reef) are US-based and ship shells to Canadian dealers.
How much does the pool shell brand affect the total project cost?
The pool shell typically represents 30 to 35 percent of the total project cost. The price difference between a budget shell and a premium shell of similar size is usually $5,000 to $12,000 CAD. That difference matters, but it is a smaller part of the total than most homeowners expect. The quality of the installation has at least as much impact on long-term performance as the brand of the shell.
Can I choose any fiberglass pool manufacturer for my project?
Not always. Most pool companies are authorized dealers for one or two manufacturers. They know those shells well, they have established relationships with the factory, and they can get warranty support if needed. Asking an installer to use a manufacturer they do not have a relationship with can lead to longer lead times and limited warranty support.
What is the difference between vinyl ester resin and polyester resin in fiberglass pools?
Vinyl ester resin absorbs less water than polyester resin, which makes it more resistant to osmotic blistering. Most premium manufacturers now use vinyl ester resin for at least the outer layers of their shells. Some budget manufacturers still use polyester resin throughout, which increases the risk of blistering over time.
